Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury sustained during a warm-up match against South Africa, and veteran Mohammed Siraj has been brought in as his replacement. The injury to emerging Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has dealt a major blow to the Indian cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
In the pre-match press conference ahead of India’s T20 World Cup opener vs USA, captain Suryakumar Yadav did not confirm him being ruled out. He said: “Harshit Rana has not been ruled out yet, the physios are assessing him but he does not look good. We’ll know by the end of the day.”
However, reliable sources have confirmed to outlets like The Indian Express that the young pacer will not be fit to participate in the tournament at all. His condition rules him out completely, with Mohammed Siraj set to join as replacement.
However, Rana’s absence is a significant loss, especially considering his performance in the T20 series against New Zealand in January 2026. In that series, Rana surprised everyone by dismissing New Zealand’s star opener Devon Conway five times consecutively, across both ODIs and T20Is.
His swing and pace played a crucial role in India’s 4-1 series victory, and he was expected to carry that form into the T20 World Cup. Unfortunately, the injury has changed everything. While Siraj’s inclusion brings experience to the team, the absence of Rana’s youthful energy will be keenly felt.
When Shami Replaced Bumrah
This isn’t the first time India has faced such a pre-tournament blow. History shows it can sometimes lead to silver linings. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out just before the tournament due to a back injury.
