Darius Garland is a two-time NBA All-Star point guard who now plays for the LA Clippers. Cleveland traded him to the Clippers for James Harden on 4 February 2026, after six and a half seasons with the Cavaliers. His NBA salary is the one number that can be stated exactly: Spotrac counts $139.3 million in career earnings through 2025–26, and he is paid $42,166,510 in 2026–27. Published net worth estimates range from $12 million to $35 million, but every one of them dates from 2024 or early 2025, before the trade and before most of the $76 million he was paid across 2024–25 and 2025–26.
This article sets out what he has been paid, where each net worth figure comes from and why they disagree, and the business interests that sit outside his contract.

NBA Career and Lucrative Contracts
A meniscus injury ended Garland’s college career at Vanderbilt after five games, and he left school to prepare for the 2019 draft. The Cavaliers took him fifth overall anyway. Scouts liked his playmaking and shooting, and he drew comparisons to Stephen Curry.
His rookie-scale deal paid $29,083,315 over four seasons. On 8 July 2022 he signed a five-year designated rookie extension worth $197,230,450, fully guaranteed, at 25% of the salary cap; it would have risen to about $231 million at 30% had he made an All-NBA team, which he did not. That deal moved with him to Los Angeles, and per Spotrac its 15% trade bonus was voided by the maximum-salary rule. His $42,166,510 for 2026–27 is the joint-30th salary in the league, exactly the same as Zion Williamson, who was drafted in the same 2019 class and signed the same kind of extension; see our list of the highest-paid NBA players for 2026–27.
| Seasons | Team | Salary paid |
|---|---|---|
| 2019–20 to 2022–23 | Cleveland Cavaliers (rookie scale) | $29,083,315 |
| 2023–24 to 2024–25 | Cleveland Cavaliers (extension) | $70,730,920 |
| 2025–26 (to 4 Feb) | Cleveland Cavaliers | $24,030,377 |
| 2025–26 (from 4 Feb) | LA Clippers | $15,415,713 |
| Career total | — | $139,260,325 |
| 2026–27 | LA Clippers | $42,166,510 (current season) |
| 2027–28 | LA Clippers | $44,886,930 (final year) |
Salary figures from Spotrac. The four paid rows add up to the career total. The Cleveland and Clippers rows for 2025–26 are the two teams’ shares of that season’s $39,446,090 salary, split at the trade.

Before the trade he made 26 starts for Cleveland in 2025–26, averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 assists alongside Donovan Mitchell. On 22 March 2026 he scored 41 points with 11 assists and eight three-pointers in an overtime win over Dallas, the first 40-10-7 game in Clippers history (Wikipedia). He played those weeks alongside Kawhi Leonard, whose own trade to Toronto became official in September 2026.
Endorsements Deals
Garland wore Nike for his first four seasons, then signed a multi-year endorsement deal with New Balance in November 2023 (Sneaker Freaker). Neither side has disclosed what it pays. An earlier version of this article put it at $500,000 to $2 million a year; that was a guess about All-Star shoe deals in general, not a figure for Garland, and has been removed.
His best-documented business interest is Hot Chicken Takeover, the Columbus-based restaurant chain. In July 2023 he became an investment partner in its parent company, Untamed Brands, and took a seat on its board (Crain’s Cleveland Business). The size of the stake was not disclosed.
Other endorsement income is not publicly documented, so it is not counted here.

Darius Garland Net Worth
Published estimates of Darius Garland’s net worth disagree badly, and none is current. ClutchPoints put it at $12 million in February 2025. EssentiallySports gave $30–35 million, citing a report from 2024. Surprise Sports, updated in May 2026, lists his net worth as $226,313,765, but that figure to the dollar is Spotrac’s total of his career salary including the 2026–27 and 2027–28 seasons he has not yet been paid. It is earnings, not wealth, and it is not a net worth.
The honest position is that his net worth is not publicly known. What is known is his pay: $139.3 million gross through 2025–26, before federal and state income tax and agent fees. Both the $12 million and the $30–35 million estimates were published before he had received most of the $76.2 million in salary he was paid across 2024–25 and 2025–26, so both are almost certainly too low today. This article does not publish its own figure.
Father-Son Dynamics
Garland’s father, Winston Garland, played seven seasons in the NBA and coached his son from an early age, an influence Andscape has written about in detail. Winston later worked as a recreational leader at the Indiana State Prison and coached at West Side Leadership Academy in Gary.
Personal Life
Darius Garland was born in Gary, Indiana, to Felicia and Winston Garland, and is the youngest of six children, with an older sister and four older brothers (Wikipedia; an earlier version of this article listed three siblings). He started playing basketball at age five and grew up a fan of Kobe Bryant. At Brentwood Academy in Tennessee he won four state titles and was named Tennessee Mr. Basketball three times.
The Bottom Line
Garland’s finances rest on one very large contract. He has been paid $139.3 million so far, he is owed $87.1 million more across 2026–27 and 2027–28, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2028. His net worth, unlike his salary, has not been reliably published; the estimates that exist are snapshots from before his best-paid seasons.
His extension came from the same rookie-maximum rules that now cover younger stars such as Paolo Banchero, whose own 25% extension starts in 2026–27.
Updated 7 October 2026: rewritten after Garland’s February 2026 trade to the LA Clippers, verified against Spotrac’s transaction log and Wikipedia. Contract and career-earnings figures are from Spotrac. Net worth estimates were checked on the ClutchPoints, EssentiallySports and Surprise Sports pages themselves. The New Balance deal is from Sneaker Freaker and the Hot Chicken Takeover investment from Crain’s Cleveland Business.
