Linebacker sidelined as league investigates domestic violence allegations
Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller has been suspended for four games without pay for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The suspension, announced by the league on Tuesday, follows allegations from a domestic incident that occurred during the team’s bye week in November 2023. While no criminal charges were filed, the NFL conducted its own investigation, which led to the decision.
Incident Allegations and Legal Developments
The suspension stems from accusations that Miller assaulted his pregnant girlfriend in their Dallas home on November 29, 2023. According to the police affidavit, the alleged victim reported that Miller pushed her, placed pressure on her neck, and physically attempted to force her out of the apartment during a heated argument. She later told police that she was able to breathe but sustained bruises on her neck and minor injuries on her hand and abdomen.
Miller turned himself in to the Glenn Heights Police Department in Texas the following day. He was released on a $5,000 bond, but the case never progressed to formal charges. Miller has since denied all accusations, calling them “100% false” and “completely blown out of proportion.” His girlfriend later described the situation as a “misunderstanding,” expressing frustration over how the events were portrayed publicly.
Despite the legal case being closed without charges, the NFL’s personal conduct policy allows the league to take independent action, which resulted in Miller’s suspension.

NFL’s Response and Disciplinary Actions
Although the NFL has not publicly detailed its findings from the investigation, the league’s decision to impose a suspension underscores the broader scope of the personal conduct policy, which is designed to address off-field behavior that could damage the league’s image. The suspension means Miller will miss four key games, including matchups against the Houston Texans, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans, before being eligible for reinstatement after Week 8.
This is not the first time the NFL has imposed disciplinary measures on Miller. In 2013, the linebacker served a six-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. While these past infractions were unrelated to the current situation, the suspension adds to Miller’s complex history with NFL discipline.
Miller’s Career and Impact on the Buffalo Bills
Von Miller, a 35-year-old veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion, has long been one of the NFL’s top defensive players. As the league’s active leader in sacks, Miller’s absence will be felt by the Buffalo Bills, who are off to a strong start this season. With 126.5 career sacks, Miller ranks 17th on the NFL’s all-time list and was expected to play a key role in the Bills’ defense this year.
Despite missing significant time due to a torn ACL in 2022, Miller had managed to make an impact in the first four games of the 2024 season, recording three sacks. However, his four-game absence will create a notable gap in Buffalo’s defense, which the team is addressing by signing defensive tackle Zion Logue from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.
What’s Next for Von Miller and the Bills?
Miller’s suspension raises questions about how the Bills will fare without their star linebacker during this crucial stretch of the season. With upcoming games against competitive opponents, the team will need to rely on its defensive depth to fill the void. Miller, meanwhile, will likely use the time to reflect on the incident and prepare for his return to the field, which could be as early as October 28.
In his statements, Miller expressed a desire to move on from the incident and refocus on football. “My life is all about football right now and my kids,” he said in July. “I’m just happy to be here with the Buffalo Bills and to focus on being the best player and teammate I can be.”
As the Bills continue their 2024 campaign, all eyes will be on how the team adjusts without one of its most accomplished defensive stars, and whether Miller can regain his focus and reputation upon his return to the field.
