Huvert Ira Davis Jr. was born on May 17, 1970 in Winston–Salem, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina. Davis was selected as the 20th pick in the first round of the 1992 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. During his 12 seasons in the NBA (1992–2004), he played for several teams, including the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons.

After retiring from the NBA in 2004, Davis moved into media and coaching. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. In 2012, he went back to UNC as an assistant coach under Roy Williams. He stayed in that role until 2021, when Williams retired and Davis became head coach.

His first season was a success, he took the Tar Heels to the NCAA Championship game in 2022. By March 2025, he hit 100 wins as head coach, proving himself as one of the best coach in college basketball.
